Er is voldoende onderzoek (APA divisie 12 norm) gedaan in A-bladen. A-bladen betekent te vinden in de pub-med database. Er is zowel resultaatonderzoek gedaan als meta-analyses (Review articles) over de EFT-therapievorm.

Er zijn wetenschappelijke verklaringen (neurobiologische) voor hoe EFT werkt.

In pubmed is te lezen dat er recent met positief resultaat onderzoek is gedaan naar EFT bij psychotrauma, depressie, fobie (2) , examenangst, spanningshoofdpijn , de biochemie van stress, de vergelijking tussen EFT en EMDR, en tussen EFT, WHEE, en CGT.

De neurobiologische verklaring van Ronald Ruden.

Andrade, Aalberse, Ruden en Sutherland schrijven dat EFT een vorm is van een kortdurende multi-sensore activatie-interventie (zie www.bmsa-int.com). Er wordt gesproken over de zenuwknopen van de nervus vagus in het buik- en borstgebied (het autonome zenuwstelsel). Er wordt beschreven hoe het kloppen neurochemische veranderingen in het limbische systeem (met name in de amygdala) veroorzaakt. Een opgeroepen herinnering is in feite op dat moment beïnvloedbaar (labiel). Glutamaat komt vrij bij het afstemmen op en oproepen van een gevoel uit de herinnering. Glutamaat zorgt onder anderen voor de opslag (encodering) van angst. Het kloppen zorgt voor het vrijkomen van Gamma-aminoboterzuur (GABA) en serotonine. De serotonine zorgt voor een daling van de intensiteit van de beleving en in de basolaterale kern van de amygdala. De serotonine inhibeert dat glutamaat het opgeroepen gevoel weer encodeert.
